Landscaping as a Career Field

Landscaping is an exciting, creative field. People planning a career in this field should appreciate nature, enjoy working with their hands, and possess strong analytical skills. Other good skill sets are: creative vision, artistic talent and good oral and written communication skills.

In landscape work, you will use a knowledge of design, construction, land-use planning and environmental issues. As you grow in your career, landscape architects may become project managers, taking on the responsibility for meeting schedules and budgets, in addition to overseeing the project design.

We also need people of all skill and education levels to implement and maintain these designs. You'll learn how to read landscape plans and work with hardscapes. It is also very desirable if you have a pesticide license and are CDL certified. We offer incentives to obtain these licenses. Learn more about certification testing.

Entry Level Positions Lead to Career Positions

Line Trimmers:

Many line trimmers graduate to Mowing Operators and Crew Leaders, even the same year they start!

We have persons that started here as Lawn Trimmers who are now the two Area Managers for Mowing Operations in summer, and in winter are the Snow Plowing & Salting Operations Manager or Sidewalk Services Manager. Others have become Sidewalks Services Supervisors or Snow Plowing Area Managers.

Mowing Operators:

If already skilled as a Mowing Operator, this can be an entry level position.

Landscape Laborers & Landscape Skilled Laborers: We have persons who started as Landscape Laborers and became or came as Landscape Skilled Laborers & Landscape Crew Leaders. One has become the Buyer - Building & Grounds Manager; another became a Crew Leader and another a Sales Technician. A Crew Leader can become a Senior Crew Leader or Supervisor of multiple crews.

Sidewalk Snow Services Laborers: Still others have come as Sidewalk Snow Services Shovelers/Snow-Blower Operators for winters at excellent winter wage rates, and then became summer season laborers and operators.

Have a CDL? You have an advantage.

Have a Pesticide License? You have an advantage.

Incentives for having or obtaining these Licenses: We offer incentives to obtain these licenses. Learn more about certification testing.
