Corrective Pruning

Corrective pruning is the pruning of a tree, a shrub or evergreen that removes living, dying and dead parts of the plant for the benefit of the whole plant and everything that plant might effect.  The first step is to assess needs for corrective pruning in the plant and its surroundings.  A tree that is growing into the house, blocking an outdoor light, narrowing a walk, or presenting a danger for pedestrians are just a few of many reasons to correctively prune simply for appropriate size, clearances, and safety.

But often corrective pruning is done for the benefit of the plant itself:  perhaps the plant has crossing or rubbing branches which could cause an infection or weak spot in a limb;  maybe the plant doesn't look symmetric, needs to be reduced in size, or there is a weak branch attachment.  Taking the time to professionally assess your plants will lead to the next step:  making an inventory of the problems & creating a plan to correct the plants problems.  A true assessment is best performed for trees by a Certified Arborist, preferably with a degree in Urban Forestry.  For deciduous and evergreen shrubs, a Certified Horticultural Technician and/or degreed Horticulturist is a wise choice.

After discerning what needs to be done with the trees and/or shrubs, the work should be scheduled for the right time of the season or year.  The actual work process is carefully and slowly begun, evaluating as the work is performed, to avoid unnecessary or imprudent cuts.  By properly pruning your plant(s) at the right time and with proper strategic pruning cuts, the chance of infections, unsightly scars or appearance is avoided.  Taking the time to step back and review the process as the pruning unfolds will help ensure a proper solution to the problems and result in healthy, symmetrical and pleasingly appearing, and longer-lived trees, shrubs and evergreens.
